         What would I see if I found a canvas in the woods? Consumed by nature...
 
          I imagine... small flowers starting to break through the canvas surface, growing from wet moss like miniature cushions and beds. Blades of grass springing towards the sun, dew gripping the stems. Stones, some polished with time. I would find wild things... resting.
 
         I’d find a growing uncertainty whether the deer sleeps or decomposes.
 
         The feeling of the woods... beautiful, but brutal.
 
         I intend for the viewer to want to touch this work, mirroring my own experiences in nature. To achieve this, I learned to hand-sew and embroider hand-crafted moss from thread, yarn, and fabric. I wanted bulkier elements such as leaves/vines. Learning to crochet, I created individual/clumps of leaves that would “grow” from the canvas. Lacking a material to catch the light, I found sewing individual beads added a sense of reflective dew/rain drops, enhancing the level of textural detail desired.
 
        Knowing I’m creating a daring composition, I painted a deer on a separate loose canvas, in the size/arrangement that would fit both canvases. Later, I cut and mounted the painting onto the final piece. Complimented by Overgrown & Clustered Moss.

Overgrown
 
          This piece is the 2nd study of my textural pursuit of show casing the feeling of the woods using fiber art. I focused on creating a canvas design with cheese cloth and cardboard that reminded me of growth overtaking man-made design (concrete, brick, paneling, etc.). I expanded on the shape of my fabric “moss balls” using beadwork, indenting and adjusting the shapes to look far more natural. I continued my studies of embroidering moss made from thread, yarn, and fabric; and continued to crochet leaves that would “grow” from the piece itself.
        I intend for the viewer to want to touch this piece, mirroring the feeling I have when in nature. This piece is a compliment to Restful Growth & Clustered Moss.

Clustered Moss
 
           This is my 3rd study of fiber art and textural design, exploring ways I can portray the feeling of the woods. This time, crafting a piece inspired by jewelry, fine art, and nature. For the first time, I embroidered “moss” separately on an embroidery hoop and mounted it onto the final piece later, lending to a dramatic increase in detail that can be achieved (I will be doing this from now on). Also, I attempted a three-dimensional beadwork, creating an unexpected growth of “budding flowers”. Designing patches of “moss” and “flowers” that looked natural when mounted and clustered together took about four days.
           I intend for the viewer to want to touch this piece, mirroring the feeling I have when in nature. This piece is a compliment to Restful Growth & Overgrown.
